Great Falls is known as the ‘Electric City’ because of its numerous dams and power plants. With a population of approximately 57,000 it is Montana’s third largest city and is the home of the Great Falls International Airport. Great Falls is located on the Missouri River among the five falls for which it was so named. Within a distance of 10 miles the Missouri River drops 512 feet over perpendicular falls and many cascades. Great Falls lies approximately 50 miles east of the Continental Divide, 120 miles south of the Canadian border and 180 miles northwest of Billings, the largest city in Montana. The City encompasses an area of over 17 square miles, complete with every business, and various Great Falls MT homes.
This area also held great significance for the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The explorers were forced to spend nearly a month portaging around the falls in June 1805. Much of the Missouri River in this area remains as it was when Lewis and Clark first viewed it over 190 years ago. However the city officially began its rich history began in the year 1882 when the Honorable Paris Gibson first came to the present site of Great Falls. Great Falls was founded two years later and incorporated in 1888.
Throughout Great Falls grand spectacles can be seen in every direction. Great Falls is surrounded by mountains, and buttes on three sides, as well as, vast plains to the north.
